Myoko –
An area travel skiing Of Japan feel ‘paralysis’ due to the reduction in population. In fact, previously they lived from tourism.
Reporting from Asahi Shimbun on Monday (19/2), the area was named Suginosawa District in Myoko City. Shigeo Yamakawa, head of the Suginosawa Tourism Office, said that many resort areas have been sold.
As of spring 2022, the city of Myoko has sold 43 hectares of land, part of which is the Myoko Togakushi Renzan National Park. It is known that the buyer of the area is Patience Capital Group (PCG) Pte, a real estate investment fund company based in Singapore.
PCG later acquired Madarao Mountain Resort, a ski area located in Myoko City and Liyama, Nagano Prefecture.
Yamaka said he had both hopes and concerns about the PCG acquisition.
“I’d like to see more visitors from abroad and more tourists here, but I’m also worried that the local community will be left behind if the focus is on attracting the rich,” he replied.
Currently, this facility has 30 accommodations that are members of Suginosawa Tourism. This accommodation has been based on the number 100 since the 1990s.
“The population is aging and shrinking and many tourism-related businesses are suffering from a lack of successors,” he explained.
It is common knowledge that Japan is currently experiencing a sexual recession. Based on a recent survey, 43.9 percent of married couples had “no sex” marriages and 24.3% had “almost sexless” marriages. This sexual recession is what caused depopulation or a reduction in the human population in Japan.
Ken Chan, founder and CEO of PCG (56) gave a glimpse of its development plans in an online interview in Singapore.
Chan started buying plots of land for his plan in 2020 and has now bought between 300-350 a year. He plans to build a resort hotel in Myoko Kogen by the end of 2027 with a downtown area filled with luxury brand outlets and restaurants.
Chan has provided around 35 billion Yen through real estate funds.
“This provides clues on how to attract customers, not only in winter but also in summer,” Chan said.
Myoko and Madaro have the advantage of easy access, about two and a half hours by Shinkansen and car from Tokyo.
“I hope to help the mountain resorts throughout the season there,” he explained.
PCG is not the only foreign capital company investing in Japanese ski resorts.
Myoko Suginohara ski resort was opened in 1964. The length of the ski runs is 8.5 km. The resort was previously filled with skiers and provided winter work for farmers.
