Dirk Bracke debuts in 1993 with “Steen”, a story set during an ice age. Until then, he is working in a mail sorting center. A year later, Bracke already published his second book, “Blue is bitter”: a story about child prostitution in the Philippines. The tone for his next books has been set: Bracke does not shy away from any social theme.
He writes adult stories, tailored to young people about drugs, AIDS, war, incest, prostitution, drugs, gang violence, … His style is direct and straightforward, even when it comes to sex or violence. Bracke therefore becomes the bad boy of Flemish children’s literature. But the writer makes it a point of honor to only develop a story on a certain theme after a thorough journalistic research round.
His latest book “Water Fear” was published in 2019. “Chicago” was supposed to be published a year later, but that book remains unfinished after a career of 27 years.
