Popping champagne cork costs Eritrean cyclist Girmay rest of the Giro

In fact, his clumsiness cost him the rest of this Giro d’Italia.

To hospital

Girmay celebrated his victory in the tenth stage of the Giro on the podium yesterday, traditionally with a bottle of champagne. But on opening the bottle, the cork bounced against his eye.

After the award ceremony, he had to be treated in a hospital. The injury he sustained appears to be so serious that he can no longer appear at the start today.

Girmay is the revelation of this cycling season. The leader of the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert formation wrote the Gent-Wevelgem classic to his name, and also excelled in other races in which he participated this spring. Earlier this Giro he already finished second, just behind Van der Poel.
