Christian Wück has explained the plan for long-time leader Alexandra Popp’s 145th and final international match.

Alexandra Popp will have a shorter appearance in her farewell performance against Australia in Duisburg. The 33-year-old will start her 145th and final international match as captain on Monday (6:10 p.m.), national coach Christian Wück announced after his dream debut at Wembley (4:3), “but won’t play half-time, that’s the same with her agreed.”

He was “very happy” to give Popp the minutes so that the long-time captain could receive a “suitable farewell” after being substituted in the home game. For him and his rejuvenated team, however, the encounter is seen as “a test match to make the next development, because we don’t have many games until the European Championships.”

The title hunt takes place in Switzerland in around eight months (July 2nd to 27th, 2025); Popp announced her resignation at the end of September.

In the absence of “Poppi”, Wück identified a possible Popp heiress in the center of the attack in Giovanna Hoffmann, who made her debut against European champions England in London and prepared the 3-0 win (29th). The new coach was “very satisfied” with the courageous performance of the 26-year-old from RB Leipzig as a “play station” and “physically strong player”.
