Popova: “Sport is not only the brilliance of medals and pedestals, it is thousands of broken children” – Figure skating

Betina talked about how hard it is for young skaters.

Former Russian figure skater Betina Popova spoke about the problems that athletes face at a young age.

“Two days after the competition – that’s how much time I had for my youth. As is characteristic of female athletes at a young age, the sport occupied all my thoughts. Regarding figure skating, I was a crazy fanatic. To this day, all my surroundings are people associated with my sport. I had no time for friends, for entertainment, or for first love. All my thoughts were: training – study – do not eat – training – study – do not eat.

Coaches non-stop cultivated in my head the direction of these thoughts and fear. On the way to the rink and home, I learned lessons. At home lying in bed, I went through the program in my head. I could spend four free hours a day on a four-hour cross, just to lose the extra hundred grams. All life was divided into preparation for the competition and the competition itself. Some performances ended – two days of rest, and we begin to prepare for the next. In these two days, I could begin to live, breathe and communicate, despite the controversial prohibitions on communicating with my rivals.

Later, thoughts began to appear in my head that with such a slavish approach imposed on me, one cannot become successful. An empty man is of no interest to anyone, no matter how dedicated he may be. Athletes grow up quickly, they have no childhood, they have no youth. And very often they remain unbalanced individuals. Sport is not only the brilliance of medals and pedestals, it is thousands of broken children, ”Betina wrote on Instagram.

  • Popova completed her career in February of this year.
  • During her career, Betina performed in tandem with Yuri Vlasenko and Sergey Mozgov.
