The complaint against Georgoulis touches on issues deeply rooted in our value system, stressed the press representative of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance
The position of SYRIZA-P.S. in favor of the woman who denounces Alexis Georgoulis clarified the the party’s press representative, Popi Tsapanidouspeaking to Action24, underlining the immediate reaction of SYRIZA-P.S. and the immediate expulsion of the MEP.
“We are with the victim and we show no tolerance,” she said and expressed her shock at the event. He underlined that “as soon as the complaint became known, the MEP ceased to be a member of the party, we reacted immediately and dismissed him”, and noted that in SYRIZA-P.S. they await the decision of the Justice, but “until then Alexis Georgoulis cannot be in a political party that has supported women’s rights throughout time”.
“The complaint against Mr. Georgoulis touches on issues deeply rooted in the value system of SYRIZA-PS. Women’s rights issues, for which our party has fought many battles. I can’t imagine what the woman who denounces Alexis Georgoulis has been through. Personally, it embarrasses me a lot to see her picture on the channels. I feel very upset as a woman, above all, about this case,” the spokeswoman said
Popi Tsapanidou pointed out that at the beginning there were only rumors about “bad behavior of Mr. Georgoulis”, which reached the party’s ears in 2022. “When the complaint was made, however, our party reacted immediately. Until then, there were rumors about Alexis Georgoulis, but he denied it, citing slander,” he stressed.
He underlined the following in detail: “When we learned about the rumours, when Dimitris Papadimoulis, the head of our Eurogroup, informed us about the rumors and asked Alexis Georgoulis what was happening and he denied it, SYRIZA-P.S. he didn’t leave it at that. We searched with the procedures we could, addressing the authorities of the European Parliament, if there was indeed a complaint. The relevant authorities did not confirm the rumors we were investigating of abusive behaviour. They wouldn’t even be able to confirm it because they are shrouded in secrecy. The complaint came to the E/K just the day before yesterday, because that’s when the issue of lifting immunity came up.”
“Mr. Georgoulis was removed from both the Eurogroup and our party and was asked to return the seat.”, continued Popi Tsapanidou.
“The selection of an MEP cannot be equated with whether or not he is a “bright person”. The job doesn’t automatically make you good or bad, but your personality does. But there are famous people who have a lot of good to offer, we can’t discount people’s values. The quality of everyone does not come from the profession they do or their degrees”, he emphasized.
Finally, when asked about yesterday’s poll published by ERT, Popi Tsapanidou replied: “A short hallelujah psalm, soon the polls will speak. Polls are a tool, but how effective they are is conditional. In any case, what I want to underline is this: the electoral process is one for national elections. On May 21, the citizens must send the message that they want Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his government out. The prime minister is talking about second and third elections, even if he manages to gain independence. But there is only one ballot, it is the one on May 21 and there we ask the people to support SYRIZA-PS. so that the first party comes out with a large margin. Voting for Syriza-PS is the only solution to leave the government of Mr. Mitsotakis.”
