After the Pope’s special envoy Zuppi had just concluded his visit to the United States, Archbishop Pierre, the Holy See’s ambassador to the United States, accepted an interview with Vatican News and briefly introduced the situation of the cardinal’s visit to the United States. He said that we cannot solve all the problems at once, but we are hopeful for the future.
(Vatican News Network) After the Pope’s special envoy Zuppi met with US President Joe Biden on July 18, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Holy See’s ambassador to the United States, gave an interview to Vatican News Network the next day to outline the situation of the meeting.
Ambassador Pierre first stated that he shared Cardinal Zupi’s views on a just peace in Ukraine. Card Zupi’s mission is to try to offer a vision of peace from the point of view of the Church. The cardinal had a good chat with the president and met with some members of Congress on the mornings of the 18th and 19th. The nuncio said the cardinal “informed them about the specific work that is being carried out, including the operations in Ukraine and Russia, his several meetings, and the Pope’s will and his ways to contribute to the pursuit of peace”.
“President Biden listened a lot, he also agreed with the pope’s initiative, the cardinal’s initiative, and we had many exchanges on the president’s and the pope’s views on the issue. Cardinal Zuppi has always insisted that we are willing to contribute, but we cannot solve all the problems at once. We know the complexity of the problem. Therefore, he insists on the humanitarian dimension and the pope’s desire to contribute in every possible way, especially for the situation of children who were brought from Ukraine to Russia.”
Then the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States continued: “The cardinal told the president that the work has just begun, and he found that there is indeed goodwill everywhere to try to solve this problem. So we are in the process of solving the problem. At the moment we have no results, but there is hope, and we have hope. I think it is important that everyone realizes this. I think that everywhere – including in various meetings held by the cardinal here – it is shown that people are very sensitive to the magnitude of peace and ready to help.”
Finally, Ambassador Pierre talked about the important contribution of the Holy See in efforts to bring about peace from a diplomatic point of view. “The Holy See is part of the world, and the consequences of war are terrible for people. I am talking about the situation of refugees, the dead, trauma, and especially children. As diplomats, we all know that the work moves forward step by step. We try to take the first step as much as possible. One of these processes is exactly what the Cardinal is doing, during which we do not expect to solve all problems, but are hopeful for the future,” he said.
