Kyiv –
Ukraine does not want to give in to Russia invading their sovereignty even though the Pope asked for a white flag to be raised. Ukraine will continue to fight.
Pope Francis has delivered his statement regarding the protracted conflict between Russia and Ukraine which has resulted in casualties. The Pope prioritizes the lives that must be saved.
Reported by AFP, Sunday (10/3/2024), the 87-year-old Pope was asked by public broadcaster RTS about the debate in Ukraine over whether to surrender to the Russian invasion.
“I believe that the strongest are those who look at the situation, think about their people, and have the courage to raise the white flag and negotiate,” Pope Francis said in the interview, which the Vatican said was conducted in early February.
“The word negotiate is a brave word. When you see that you are defeated, that things are not going well, then have the courage to negotiate,” he said.
He said people might feel ashamed but asked how many lives were lost.
“Currently, for example with the war in Ukraine, many want to be mediators. Turkey for example,” he said.
“Don’t be embarrassed to negotiate before things get worse,” he continued.
Speaking about conflict in general, including the Hamas-Israel war, Pope Francis added, “Negotiation never means giving up. Negotiation is the courage not to lead a country to suicide.”
