During a meeting in the Vatican earlier Thursday, the pope said that the West’s increase in military budgets was “madness”, reports Reuters.
A number of NATO countries have now committed themselves to increasing their military budgets to two percent of gross national product (GDP).
– Will change the war completely
– I was embarrassed when I read that a group of states has now committed to increase spending to two percent of GDP to buy weapons, in response to what is happening now. It’s madness, says Pope Francis.
He further said that the war in Ukraine was a product of the “old-fashioned power logic that still characterizes the so-called geopolitics”.
