Istanbul, Turkey – In a message delivered through Cardinal Kurt Koch, the Vatican’s chief ecumenical officer, Pope Francis extended heartfelt greetings to the Orthodox Church on the Feast of St. Andrew, patron saint of both the East and West.

“The ultimate goal of complete unity among Christians sharing the same Eucharistic meal has not yet been achieved,” he acknowledged. “Francis notes that this is not surprising, as divisions that go back a thousand years cannot be overcome in a few decades. However, this does not mean that one should turn away from this ultimate goal, and one should not lose hope that in the course of history, within a reasonable time frame, total unity will be achieved.”
Emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue, Pope Francis highlighted the Catholic Church’s commitment to synodality, a practice deeply rooted in the Orthodox tradition. “In a world torn apart by opposition and polarization, the members of the Assembly, despite their different backgrounds, were able to listen to each other without judgment or condemnation,” he wrote, referencing the recent Synod of Bishops held in Rome. "The Pope expressed
his desire for "a non-judicial hearing" to guide ongoing conversations about unity.
The message concluded with a call for unity in faith and a shared commitment to peace:
" The fraternity practiced in life and to which Christians bear witness will be a message to a world torn by war and violence,” Francis wrote. In this regard, he joined his brothers and sisters from Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in praying for peace in Ukraine, Palestine, Israel and Lebanon, as well as in all other troubled regions of the world.
