Pope Francis urges prayers for war victims as Ukraine’s allies criticize remarks

“Please continue to pray for those suffering from the horrific effects of war. Today I was given a rosary and a Gospel that belonged to a young soldier who fell on the front. He prayed with it. Many, many men are dying. Many, many young people are dying.

Let us ask the Lord that with His grace we can overcome the madness of war, which is always a defeat,” Francis said.

Ukraine’s allies have previously criticized the pope’s remarks, suggesting that instead of urging Ukraine to raise a “white flag” and come to the negotiating table, Francis could urge Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine and end hostilities.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said: “Our flag is yellow and blue. It is the flag by which we live, die and win. We will never raise any other flag.”
