Pope Francis Urges End to Discrimination Against Women: April Prayer Focus

Pope Francis’ Prayer for April: The Role of Women

Joey Kariveli, Vatican City

The Pope said that equality between men and women is limited to words and not put into practice.

This is what Pope Francis said in his April prayer video message, praising the need to end discrimination and torture against women and to respect their role and dignity in all cultures.

The Pope recalls the sad fact that in many parts of the world, women are considered the first waste.

Papa goes on to say that there are countries where women are forbidden to ask for help, start a business, go to school, have laws requiring women to dress in a certain way, and where women are subjected to chelakarma, or genital mutilation.

We must not suppress women’s voices. We must not suppress the voices of women who have been abused. They are exploited and marginalized. We accept in principle that men and women have equal dignity as individuals. But it is not implemented.

Governments in all parts of the world must commit to eliminating discriminatory laws and work to ensure women’s rights.

Clarifying that we must respect women and their dignity and fundamental rights, and if we do not do so, the society will not progress, the Pope invites everyone to pray for the recognition of the superiority of women and their richness in all cultures and for an end to the discrimination they are subjected to in different parts of the world.
