Pope Francis undergoes tests at hospital in Rome after suffering from ‘mild cold’

The Vatican announced that Pope Francis (87 years old), who has been suffering from a “mild cold” for several days, underwent tests at a hospital in Rome on Wednesday morning.

The Vatican said in a statement: “After the general meeting, Pope Francis went to Gemili Hospital on Tiberian Island to undergo examinations, then returned to the Vatican.”

The Pope’s white Fiat 500 car left the hospital located in the center of the Italian capital at around 12:00 (11:00 GMT), accompanied by a police escort, according to an Agence France-Presse photographer.

Earlier in the morning, Jorge Bergoglio held his weekly general audience at the Vatican but did not read the text himself. He apologized in front of thousands of believers before assigning one of his assistants to read, saying: “I still suffer from a slight cold.”

Pope Francis, who travels in a wheelchair, has suffered a series of health problems in recent years, especially in his knees, hips, and colon.

He also underwent abdominal surgery in June and canceled his visit to Dubai to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in December due to bronchitis.
