(Vatican News Network) Pope Francis is preparing to leave for Lisbon to participate in the 37th World Youth Day. This will be Pope Francis’ 42nd international trip. He visited 60 countries during his ten-year ministry. Previously, Pope Bergoglio visited Fatima in 2017, the 100th anniversary of the Apparition. On July 27, Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, introduced the details of this World Youth Day to reporters. “This is the first World Youth Day post-coronavirus. In fact, this World Youth Day was supposed to take place in 2022, but due to the ongoing health emergency, it was chosen to postpone the celebration.”

330,000 people have signed up

So far, more than 330,000 young people from 200 countries have signed up to participate in this World Youth Day. 20,000 volunteers came from 150 countries. More than 700 bishops and 20 cardinals will be in service, leading young people to the catechesis on the theme “Arise”. Bruni noted that “these gatherings will have the quality of walking together and talking to each other”.

Successive Popes, Portugal and Fatima

According to the director of the press office of the Holy See, three popes have visited Portugal and Fatima long before Pope Francis. It is “the place where the great suffering of the world is entrusted to the Virgin Mary.” Pope Paul VI called prayer the channel of peace. Peace is both “a gift of God and the fruit of human cooperation”.

Pope John Paul II visited the country four times and his experience is closely intertwined with Fatima. On the tenth anniversary of the beatification of the shepherd boys Francis and Jacinda, Pope Benedict XVI also visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, emphasizing the relevance and vitality of his message.

pray for peace

Peace is of course also at the heart of this WYD prayer. When questioned by reporters, Bruni neither confirmed nor ruled out the possibility of the Pope meeting with Russian and Ukrainian youths.

Asked whether a meeting between the Pope and victims of pedophilia had been arranged, a Vatican spokesman emphasized that the Pope’s sensitivity and attention to the issue are well known: “If these meetings take place, they will be held in a confidential manner. .This is also to facilitate the healing process of the victim. If there is a meeting, it will be announced after the fact.”

Pope Francis will make a total of 11 public speeches during this trip, including nine speeches and two homily. Only the first speech will be delivered in Italian, the rest will be in Spanish. “This is the Pope’s language. This way more people are reached,” Bruni explained.
