Pope Francis Prays for Victims of Recent Mediterranean Shipwreck

Pope Francis prayed for the 41 people who lost their lives in the recent Mediterranean shipwreck during the Angelus on Sunday, calling it a tragic and shameful tragedy. The Pope urged the political and diplomatic circles to work to heal the wound, and commended all those who worked to prevent shipwrecks and rescue those who perished.

(Vatican News Network) Pope Francis fervently issued an appeal for the continuous occurrence of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea during the Angelus on August 13. Last Tuesday, a boat from Tunisia sank in the Sicily Channel, killing 41 people, including three children. In addition to saying that he would pray for them, the Pope pointed out with deep sorrow that from the beginning of this year to the present, nearly 2,000 men, women and children have died in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to enter Europe. “This is a still open wound in our humanity”.

The Pope was deeply saddened by this, calling such incidents a shame for humanity. He urged the political and diplomatic community to work with compassion and love to heal the wound, and he commended all those working to prevent and rescue victims of shipwrecks.

Four people rescued from last Tuesday’s sinking have been taken to a reception center on the island of Lampedusa. They asked to continue their original itinerary, according to De Ashantien of the local Red Cross emergency services. Currently 2,610 people are being cared for at the reception center on Lampedusa, and 1,000 people are expected to be sent elsewhere soon. On the morning of the 13th, the Italian Coast Guard picked up a body in the waters of Sicily, which is believed to be one of the two missing persons in another shipwreck that occurred on the night of the 12th. Eleven other people on board were rescued.

The sinking of refugee boats also continued in other parts of Europe, including French waters.
