Pope Francis Pays Tribute to Former Italian President Napolitano at Funeral Chapel

Pope Francis came to the funeral chapel of former Italian President Napolitano to bid farewell to the body of his friend. In his message of condolence a few days ago, the Pope called Napolitano a “servant of the country.”

(Vatican News Network) The Holy See Press Office issued an announcement on September 24 that Pope Francis went to the Italian Senate after 1:15 pm that day to pay tribute to the recently deceased President Giorgio Napolitano. In front of the mourning hall, he expressed his emotions for the deceased and their families with his personal presence and prayers, and paid tribute to the late president’s great contribution to Italy.

Not long ago, on September 20, the Pope also mentioned President Napolitano at the end of the public audience, calling him a “servant of the country.” At that time, the former president had been receiving treatment in a hospital in Rome for four months, and his health had recently deteriorated. After Napolitano died of illness on September 22, the Pope immediately sent a message of condolences to the deceased’s wife, and on that occasion mentioned that the late president was “far-sighted” in making major choices in life for the country.

The memorial hall of the former President of the Italian Republic in the Senate Hall will be open until September 25, and the funeral will be held with a non-religious ceremony at 11:30 am on September 26 in the Hall of the House of Representatives.
