Pope Francis meets with Sister Gramik and New Ways Ministries members to discuss support for LGBTQ+ community

The Pope received Sister Gramik, co-founder of New Ways Ministries, and several members at Casa Santa Marta. The organization was established in the United States in the 1970s and provides psychological, material and spiritual assistance to homosexuals and transgender people.

(Vatican News) Pope Francis, after years of exchanges of letters and book exchanges with Sister Gramik, co-founder of New Ways Ministries, met on October 17 at Casa Santa Marta. The nun and several members of the order were personally received. “New Ways Ministry” was founded in 1977 in the Archdiocese of Washington, USA. It aims to provide psychological, spiritual and material assistance to homosexuals and transgender people so that they will not feel unduly excluded.

The association’s website stated that the meeting was held in the hall of Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican and lasted about 50 minutes. Sister Gramik wrote on her website, “For me, this meeting was very emotional. Since the day he was elected pope, I have loved and admired Pope Francis for his humility, his devotion to the poor and those who are marginalized. Love for those who are rejected by society. The Pope looks into your heart and his eyes tell you that God loves you.” In an interview with US media, Sister Gramik said she expressed her gratitude to the Pope for his words about accepting sexual minorities.

Last year, on the occasion of the nun’s 50th anniversary of her service to gay and transgender people, the Pope wrote to Sister Gramik to say “thank you” for all her “closeness, compassion and tenderness” towards these people. In his letter, the pope wrote that the nuns were working “in the style of God.”
