Pope Francis arrived in Iraq on Friday and met with senior government officials on the pope’s first visit to the country, aimed at promoting his call for greater brotherhood among all people.

He also met Ayatollah Agung Ali al-Sistani, one of the most senior clerics in Shia Islam, in Iraq’s holy city of Najaf on Saturday. During the meeting, the Pope conveyed a common message about peaceful coexistence.
He then spoke about the spectrum of the rich Iraqi religious community in Ur, where Prophet Ibrahim, a central figure in Judaism, Christianity and Islam is believed to have been born in the second millennium BC (BC). There, he made eager pleas for “unity” after the conflict. He also listened to the recitation of the verses of the Qur’an.

“It all starts here,” Pope Francis said, after hearing the views of representatives of Iraq’s diverse religious community Daily Sabah, Sunday (7/3/2021).
After a prayer ceremony in Ur, the Pope returned to Baghdad to celebrate his first public mass in the country, at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral.
