Pope Francis called for an end to human trafficking, which often leads to death, in his speech in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican at noon on Sunday, which followed a week after the boat disaster in Calabria, southern Italy.
The head of the Catholic Church expressed his pain over the tragedy on the shores of Steccato di Cutro.
Francis said: he prays for the victims, their relatives and the survivors. He expressed his appreciation to the local population and institutions for their acceptance and solidarity.
He appealed to the world to ensure that such tragedies do not happen again.
“Human traffickers must be stopped, they must no longer rule over the lives of so many innocent people,” he stated.
he added.
He asked the Lord to give people the strength to accept their fate and mourn the tragedy.
As usual, the head of the church delivered his Sunday speech from the window of the papal suite overlooking St. Peter’s Square, and then at the end spoke about the disaster that happened a week ago. Pope Francis observed a short silence after the sermon, which was joined by the faithful listening to him in the square.
