The 84-year-old pope is to undergo surgery for an inflammation of the colon, so-called diverticulum disease. No further information has been received about the case, but the Vatican says there will be a statement when the operation is over.
Earlier on Sunday, the pope, as usual, greeted the believers in St. Peter’s Square from his window in the Vatican.
Pope Francis is said to be in generally good health, but as a young man he had parts of one lung removed. He is also at times plagued by sciatica.
