Pope Francis expresses his grief for the victims of the shipwreck that occurred off the coast of Calabria

In his speech after reciting the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis prays for the people of the Holy Land and Burkina Faso and for his closeness to the Syrian people and the Turkish people

After reciting the Angelus, Pope Francis greeted the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square and said, “Dear brothers and sisters, the painful news continues to reach me from the Holy Land: many people were killed, many children among them… How can we stop this cycle of violence?” I renew my appeal for dialogue to prevail over hatred and revenge, and I raise my prayer to God for the Palestinians and Israelis, so that they may find the path of brotherhood and peace with the help of the international community.

Pope Francis continued, “I am also deeply concerned about the situation in Burkina Faso, where terrorist attacks continue. I invite you to pray for the people of that dear country, so that the violence they have suffered does not make them lose confidence in the path of democracy, justice and peace.

The Holy Father concluded by saying this morning I was painfully informed of the shipwreck that occurred on the coast of Calabria, near Crotone. Forty dead people, including many children, have been recovered so far. I pray for each one of them, for the missing, and for the other immigrants who are still alive. I thank all those who have provided assistance and all those who provide reception. May the Virgin Mary sustain these brothers and sisters of ours. And let us never forget the tragedy of the war in Ukraine, a year has passed since the war. And let us not forget the pain of the Syrian people and the Turkish people because of the earthquake.
