(Vatican News Network) At the request of the founder of the Pan-American Commission for the Promotion of Social Rights and the Franciscan Instruction of the Judiciary (COPAJU), Pope Francis established in a personal letter that the Commission is an international private association of Christians. The committee was formally established in the Vatican in June 2019. At that time, there were about 120 judicial officials from all over the Americas. Today the committee continues to grow throughout the Americas, with national chapters established in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, the United States and Paraguay.
The committee has organized many international events since its creation. In his letter, the Pope mentioned meetings in Rome in 2019 and 2023, Argentina in 2021, Mexico in 2022 and Paraguay in 2023. Thus, the pope noted, “a number of documents provide direction and define the common position of the members on the many situations within the mandate of the Inter-American Council”.
In addition to this personal letter signed on August 15, the charter of the committee is also attached to the letter, and its effective date is August 31 this year. In addition, the Pope appointed the chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and other members for the committee from 2023 to 2028. They come from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, the United States, Chile and Peru.
At the same time, with this personal letter, the “Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Research Center” for the promotion of social rights and related research was established, with the aim of advancing the Scholarly, pedagogical and educational work on topics such as social rights, immigration phenomena and colonialism. The Pope wrote that the research center will be funded by the Pan-American Council for the Promotion of Social Rights and Franciscan Instruction of the Judiciary, under the leadership and management of the Council, and will operate within the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. The pope also appointed the board of directors for the research center for 2023-2028.
At the end of the personal letter, the Pope said that the high-level members of the Pan-American Council for the Promotion of Social Rights and the Franciscan Instruction must be approved by the Pope for a term of office every five years.
