On Wednesday, it was reported that Pope Francis had a respiratory infection because he was having difficulty breathing. The 86-year-old man was finally rushed to a hospital in Rome for intensive care. It turned out that after being examined by a doctor, Pope Francis was diagnosed with bronchitis.
“I’m not afraid, I’m still alive,” the 86-year-old man said jokingly as he left Gemelli Hospital, quoted by the BBC.
Even though he had been treated for three days, the leader of the Catholic church was reported to have returned from the hospital on Saturday (1/4). In fact, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said on Friday that the Pope was expected to take part in a service this weekend on Palm Sunday.
“I can confirm that, as he is scheduled to leave the hospital tomorrow [Sabtu]Pope Francis is expected to appear in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday for the Eucharistic celebration of Palm Sunday, the Passion of the Lord,” Bruni said in a statement.
As is known, the man from Argentina has served as Pope for 10 years. However, he has suffered from a number of health problems throughout his life, including having one of his lungs removed at the age of 21.
He has also used a wheelchair in recent months due to problems related to his knee.
Even so, the Pope remains active, even visiting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan in February. The previous month, he officiated at the funeral of his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI.
