“Today we begin the Year of Prayer: that is, a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer, prayer in personal life, in the life of the Church, and prayer in the world,” said His Holiness Pope Francis in his greeting after reciting the Angelus prayer.
After reciting the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis greeted the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square and said, Dear brothers and sisters, the coming months will lead us to the opening of the Holy Door, with which we will begin the Jubilee. I ask you to intensify your prayers so that we may be prepared to live this event of grace well and to experience the power of God’s hope, and so today we begin the Year of Prayer: a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need of prayer, prayer in the personal life, in the life of the Church, and prayer in the world. The booklet that will be placed in our hands by the Evangelization Department will also help us.
Pope Francis continued, saying, “Let us pray during these days in particular for the unity of Christians, and we do not tire of offering our prayers to the Lord for peace in Ukraine, Israel, Palestine, and in many other parts of the world.” It is the weak who suffer because of the absence of peace. I think of the little ones, of the many children who were injured and killed, of those who were deprived of kindness, of those who were deprived of dreams and a future. Let us feel the responsibility to pray and build peace for them!
The Holy Father concluded by saying, “I have learned with pain the news of the kidnapping of a group of people in Haiti, including six nuns: While I demand their release, I pray for social harmony in the country and I call on everyone to put an end to the violence that is causing so much suffering to this dear people.”
