VATICAN CITY: Sex reassignment surgeries and surrogacy are serious threats to human dignity, the Catholic Church declared on Monday. These have been compared to abortion and euthanasia, which the Vatican calls practices that violate God’s plan for human life.

The 20-page declaration, which took five years to prepare, was released by the Vatican Archives. Pope Francis approved it on March 25 after several months of testing. It was on his instructions that the declaration of ‘Extreme Dignity’ was issued.

The Vatican rejects the ‘gender theory’ which states that a person’s sex can be changed. God created man as biologically distinct male and female. Therefore, the declaration says not to change God’s plan or try to be God yourself. Any sex reassignment intervention is said to be a threat to the fundamental dignity of the person acquired in the womb.

The Vatican also noted that surrogacy violates the dignity of both the surrogate mother and the unborn child.
