Paris> Pope Francis has asked European countries to be tolerant of migrants. The call was made at a meeting of bishops and youth from Mediterranean countries in Marseille, France. Immigration is not an emergency. Rather it is the reality of our times. It must be managed with wise foresight, the Pope said. The Pope’s call comes at a time when the debate has been renewed after a large number of migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa last week. French President Emmanuel Macron was also present in the audience. According to the United Nations, 8,500 people arrived in Lampedusa in 199 boats from last Monday to Wednesday.
