Pope Francis Calls for Prayers for Tragedies in Ukraine, Cameroon, and Mediterranean Shipwrecks

After the “Angel of the Lord” prayer, Francis spoke about the tragedies that many countries are experiencing today. The Pope called for prayers for war-torn Ukraine, mentioned the victims of the devastating fires and pointed to the political tension in Cameroon. He called the current disasters at sea, in which refugees going to Europe die, an open wound in the flesh of humanity.

Francis said: “A few days ago, another tragic shipwreck took place in the Mediterranean Sea, in which forty-one people lost their lives. I pray for them. It is with pain and shame that I must say that since the beginning of the year, almost two thousand men, women and children have died in this at sea trying to reach Europe. It is a deep wound in the flesh of humanity. Therefore, I encourage and support political and diplomatic efforts to heal this wound in a spirit of solidarity and brotherhood, as well as the efforts of all those working to prevent shipwrecks and save refugees and migrants.”

The Pope recalled that on August 14, the eve of the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage will be held in Bafusa, Cameroon, to pray for peace in a country still plagued by violence and war. “Let us agree to pray for our brothers and sisters in Cameroon, that God, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, strengthens the hopes of the people who have suffered for years and opens the paths of dialogue that lead to harmony and peace,” the Holy Father called.

The Pope called to pray for Ukraine, which is suffering so much from the war, so that peace will be achieved as soon as possible. Francis confirmed that he remembers the victims of the Hawaii fires in his prayers and expresses his condolences to their families.
