Pope Francis, current Pope of Alexandria, and Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Tawadros meet at the Vatican on the fiftieth anniversary of the meeting between Pope Saint Paul VI and Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Shenuda III. This meeting will contribute greatly to the ecumenical friendship of the two churches. The Patriarch, who will arrive in Rome on May 9, will join Pope Francis on May 10 at the Vatican in St. Peter’s Square. Then on May 11th we will have a private meeting with the Pope and join in prayer together.

Later on the same day, the Patriarch will also visit the Dicastery for the Christian community. The Patriarch will also visit the faithful of the Orthodox Coptic community in Rome and celebrate the Eucharist for them on the 14th of May at the Lateran Basilica in Rome.

Since the meeting ten years ago, the friendship between Pope Francis and Tawadros II has given a lot of energy to the Christian community. The words of Pope Francis that those who become martyrs for the name of Christ shed their blood for our unity, warm this friendship.
