VATICAN CITY ∙ Pope Francis officially allows priests to bless same-sex couples outside of sacraments or liturgies. The document released by the Vatican also clarifies that those who want to seek God’s blessing and stay close to the Church should not be stopped by excessive moral trials.
The new document was released as an explanation of a letter the Pope wrote to two conservative cardinals in October.
In the church’s view, marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman. There is no change in that. But those who stand outside of that view should not be abandoned or turned away from the church when they come with a request for blessings.
Not in wedding dress, wedding ceremony or as part of worship. Blessings can be given as a way to increase their faith in God and as a sign that the church welcomes everyone. The document also says that the desire to receive blessings should be appreciated.
