Pope Francis affirms that God’s mercy remains steadfast amidst global conflict.

Vatican City; Pope Francis says that even when the world suffers the ravages of war, God’s mercy does not leave us. The Pope was delivering the message as part of his weekly public visit in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican on Wednesday. The listeners were Polish-speaking pilgrims.

The Pope mentioned the upcoming celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday. As the world turns away from God and is more tested by wars, we need more of the Father’s mercy. The mercy of the Lord never ends. It always welcomes and accompanies us and will never leave us, the Pope said.

Lord, have mercy on us and the whole world. The Pope also recited the prayer that the Lord will never cease to be merciful.

The Pope also recalled the encyclical ‘Pacem in Terris’, written by Pope John XXIII during the threat of nuclear war. Pope Francis underscored its words as he celebrated the 60th anniversary of the epistle. Quoting paragraph 114 of Pacem in Terris, the Pope suggested that international relations should be renewed without the use of armed force.

The Pope called on all the faithful to find time to read the encyclical and to pray for the end of the Russian aggression and the end of the suffering in Ukraine and the return of the country to its former state.
