The Pope warns against the dehumanizing tendencies that the proliferation of technology has caused in the media world and elsewhere.
On Saturday (26/08/23), Pope Francis was addressing a delegation of around 200 participants in the 14th annual meeting of the International Catholic Legislators Network, organized in Frascati and Rome, Italy, from August 24-27. said
The theme of the conference is “Big Power Tug of War, Organized Hegemony and Technology: A Christian Response to Dehumanizing Tendencies”.
The Pope said that there are many dehumanizing tendencies resulting from technology such as deliberately spreading misinformation, promoting hatred and division, and reducing human relations to mere numbers, and so it is necessary to be vigilant.
Alluding indirectly to the influence of computer-internet technologies, the Pope exhorted that overcoming the abuse of imaginary communion can only be achieved through real communion, which includes the fundamental call to respect and listen to one another, even to those who disagree.
The Pope recalled the fact that the purpose of any network is to connect people and make them aware that they are part of a reality greater than themselves. But the Pope explained that this goal is not limited to bringing people together, but rather enabling them to work together to achieve a common goal.
The Pope said that the characteristics of the international network of Catholic legislators reflect the two essential dimensions of connecting people and leading to a common goal, reflecting the nature of the Church.
