Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI he died at his residence in the Vatican. Our condolences to the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI).
“On behalf of the churches in Indonesia, I express my deepest sorrow at the passing of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI,” PGI President General Gomar Gultom said on Saturday (12/31/2022) in a statement.
Later, Gomar remembered the Pope. According to him, the Pope is a figure who firmly defends the purity of the Church’s teachings.
“Although it seems orthodox, with its insistence against the ideas of progressive theologians such as liberation theology, and its rejection of abortion, euthanasia and LGBT, it is very open and encourages dialogue between churches, and also between religions,” he continued.
Pope Emeritus Benedict dies
As reported AFP extension and BBCOn Saturday (12/31/2022), the news of Benedict’s death was announced by the Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, in a last statement.
“It is with sadness that I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 am at the Mater Ecclesiae Convent in the Vatican,” Bruni said in a statement.
Benedict led the worldwide Catholic Church for less than eight years, before stepping down in 2013. Benedict is the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.
Benedict spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae Abbey which still exists within the Vatican. His health is known to be fragile in recent years.
