Pope Appoints Bishop Sousa Valerio as Patriarch of Lisbon, Succeeding Cardinal Clemente

(Vatican News Network) Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Cardinal Manuel Clemente, the 75-year-old Patriarch of Lisbon, Portugal on August 10, appointing Bishop Rui Manuel Sousa Valério The Patriarch of Lisbon, succeeding Cardinal Clemente, leads the Church of Lisbon. Bishop Sosa Valerio, 58, is a member of the Order of Our Lady of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Before his appointment, he was bishop of Portugal.

The new patriarch, who was born in Ourón, Portugal in 1964, obtained a master’s degree in dogmatic theology after completing philosophy at the Pontifical Laterano University in Rome and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Later, he studied linguistics at the Wisdom University of Rome and spirituality at the Monfort International Center in Leuven, Belgium. Sousa Valerio was ordained priest in March 1991.

Sosa Valerio held various positions after his ordination. He was appointed bishop of Portugal on October 27, 2018, and was ordained on November 25 of the same year.
