It should be emphasized, however, that Beatrice Egli is still successful in classic hits. That’s why he doesn’t think the genre will merge with pop.

The whole hit world was eagerly awaiting their return – and was disappointed. Helene Fischer (37) released her album “Rausch” a week ago after a long break and is breaking new ground. You won’t find any hit productions among the 24 new tracks; instead, the German megastar relies on mainstream music. The pop queen is even promoting her record label as a “pop icon”.

Vanessa Mai (29), who started out in the “Wolkenfrei” pop group, provided a template for this. Already in 2018 she named her album “Schlager”, while the songs it contained had little to do with the genre. “Today I don’t let myself be pigeonholed anymore and make the music that I like and that I stand behind one hundred percent,” she clarified in an interview with Blick in March. When asked by rapper Sido (40), she also said whether her latest collaboration, “Happy End”, was still a hit: “I hope not!”

Others did it – with moderate success
Singer Leonard (57) is not surprised that Helene Fischer and Vanessa Mai want to distance themselves from their roots. “There were always female artists who suddenly no longer wanted to see themselves as pop singers.” This is among other things with the “I want ‘nen cowboy as a man” interpreter Gitte Hænning (75), Juliane Werding (65, “On the day when Conny Kramer died”) and Marianne Rosenberg (66, “He belongs to me”) ) was the case. “The result was actually always the same, over time they disappeared from the scene or returned to their roots because the success did not materialize.”

The example of Taylor Swift (31) proves that it can also work. She began her career as an American country star, but did not make the step to global fame. It was only when she went full pop with her album “1989” in 2014 that she achieved her global breakthrough. “For the record: This is my very first official pop album,” she announced to her fans in a live stream at the time. “We created the best album I’ve ever made.” Today Taylor Swift is one of the highest earning musicians in the world.

Song producers now have more options
Singer and ex-Miss Switzerland Linda Fäh (33) also notes the change from hit to pop. “I’ve noticed that for a few years. The music producers set the pace for this development. And in the big TV shows you can see that it goes down very well, ”she says.
–
Music great Pepe Lienhard (75) sees the new technical possibilities as one of the reasons behind the development. “The songwriters are often no longer specialized in just one genre, but rather cover a wide range of styles and try them out,” he explains. “This is how a pop star can suddenly add hip-hop elements to a song.” Similar to what happened with Vanessa Mai.

Beatrice Egli stays true to the classic hit
But Lienhard does not believe that the German hit genre will disappear as it approaches pop. «Those who dare to take this step want to appeal to a younger audience. But the classic hit still exists. ” Among other things, the Swiss singer Beatrice Egli (33), who holds the bar for the hit, deserves special mention. «Your music can be clearly defined as a hit. And it is more than successful with it. “
–
Leonard also believes in the persistence of the successful German music style. “I myself stand by Schlager, and I don’t care whether Vanessa Mai or Helene Fischer call themselves Schlager or Pop singers,” he says. “The question is rather whether the new orientation will actually reach a broader group of fans. I dare to doubt that. “

New album from 0 to 1
It will only be seen in a few months whether the realignment is worthwhile for Helene Fischer. But the first signs are good: In Germany, their latest album shot straight from 0 to 1, and in Switzerland, too, should be a top spot in the hit parade that will appear on Sunday afternoon. The fans don’t seem to blame her for betraying the hit.
