In 1982, a young girl with a guitar stood on the ESC stage – and won: Nicole. Then fate struck: cancer. Now she talked about her journey.
Won the ESC – but then came the cancer
Friday evening, the MDR talk show “Riverboat”. Among the guests: Our actually biggest ESC star Nicole. Nicole has a lot to celebrate. She just turned 60 and has been married for 40 years. But it’s not just her birthday that she’s honoring – it’s also her triumph over cancer and the start of a new chapter. With “Carpe Diem” she releases an album that embodies exactly this spirit.

She appears on the show with her song “I congratulate myself” and sings lines that have a very special meaning after years full of challenges. “I did it,” is one line – a kind of balance sheet of her life, but in a positive light.
Nicole tells “Riverboat” that she celebrated her 60th birthday with the whole family in Greece. She certainly had moments there to look back on her life – on everything she has experienced and endured. This also includes a particularly difficult phase: the diagnosis of breast cancer.
“I didn’t want any pity,” Nicole reveals, and that’s why she initially told no one other than her family about her illness. “I didn’t want to worry people unnecessarily.” She kept her secret for over a year.
During this difficult time, it was her family and her faith that gave her strength. “I’m not a notorious churchgoer, but I’m very religious. “You have to have something to believe in,” she explains, adding that her faith and love for her loved ones motivated her to fight cancer and ultimately win.
