Pop group “Aqua” had their big breakthrough 25 years ago when they released the song “Barbie Girl”. The success meant that Lene Nystrøm (49), René Diff (54), Søren Rasted (53) and Claus Norréen (52) became world stars overnight.
– I felt very lonely
It was therefore a shock to many when the group suddenly disbanded just four years later, in 2001, and while they were still at the top.
At the time, the artists explained that the desire for a solo career was the reason for the split, but in a new podcast series they admit that wasn’t the truth at all. Danish reports Look and listen.
Secret relationship
In DR’s “Hvem er Aqua?” Podcast, in which all band members apart from Norréen take part, they reveal the real reason they split up.
It seems that Nystrøm and Rasted were responsible for the collapse of the group.
The two, who were married until 2017, began a secret relationship and it is said that it all started during a party at Rasted’s house in the spring of 2001, where an innocent kiss suddenly turned into something more.
– The woman of my life
They fell in love, but decided to hide it from Diff and Norréen.
– We knew very well we were doing real shit, but we couldn’t do anything about it, says Rasted.
– I felt disappointed
After only a few months, the loving couple traveled to Las Vegas to be forged in hymen chains, and still no one knew anything about the romance. When they woke up the next day, however, all hell broke out.
The entire Danish press was waiting at the hotel reception, and so the remaining members of “Aqua” found out about their relationship through the newspapers.
– For us it was the beginning of the end. It was really painful for them. They felt very disappointed and I regret it, says Nystrøm.

Dif says that at that moment he felt that the decision-making power in the band was about to change and that the group was split into two teams with him and Norréen on one side and the married couple on the other.
When the couple traveled to Italy for their honeymoon in late summer, they received a call from Diff and Norréen with the message that they would no longer be in the pop group.
“Aqua” was disbanded and all four began their solo careers. In 2007, however, they got together again, which they have done several times in recent years.
