The opening track «Burning Bridges» is perfectly OK – not so pure little Abba, in fact. But we actually have to go all the way to the middle of the album before we find something that says “bang”. Not like in “Don’t Kill My Vibe” from “Sucker Punch” (2019), because such songs do not come every 15 minutes. But still.
«Mistake Like You» has this a little perpetual about it. A slightly overloaded ballad? I like it – and it’s followed by the album’s only innertier. Sigrid is followed by a duet with Oliver Sykes, the vocalist in Bring Me The Horizon, and these are – yes, things! It actually smells a bit like Alicia Keys here.
Sigrid is still often treated as a kind of “girl” in the process of taking the pop throne. She has turned 25, and – by all means – she is an outstanding representative of Norwegian and international pop music! I therefore point a high-pointed finger at all the unsuspecting who believe that everything was much better before, often with the addition that “today it is just a matter of pressing a computer”.
That’s not the case. Technology has not removed the absolutely essential element of music production – the ability to compose.
Why did I get into this with age? Yes – when The Beatles released «Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band »(1967), Paul McCartney and John Lennon were 24 and 26 years old, respectively. And this was the band’s eighth album…
I like Sigrid, but maybe some of the superlatives deserve to be put in historical relief?
Then I make a mistake if I do not highlight «Thank Me Later». She picks up a few per mille from Disney’s Frozen. But there the the song could perhaps rightly be said to be plagiarism of “Let It Be”, is Sigrid’s song pure and genuine pop-musical joy!
