the essentials in brief

  • Known for his large sculptures of everyday objects.

The sculptor died Monday at his New York home and studio while recovering from a fall, according to his gallery. Oldenburg was “one of the most radical artists of the 20th century” and “changed the nature of sculpture,” explained Arne Glimcher of the Pace Gallery.

From a bitten apple to hamburgers and ice cream cones – Oldenburg, who was born in Sweden and moved to New York in 1956, made impressive sculptures out of everything. These were often set up in public places and found an audience of millions and almost as many fans. But his works could also be seen again and again in the great museums of the world.
