Poor sleep is the mother of all health problems

Those who sleep less than six hours are 45% more likely to be obese than those who sleep seven to nine hours a night. This is demonstrated, among other things, by a study by Oxford Academic. At the same time, obesity also causes sleep problems. People with obesity have an increased risk of sleep disordered breathing (SDB). As many as 50% of adults with SDB show signs of insomnia.

Adults with diabetes who sleep seven to eight hours a day have the lowest risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Furthermore, the quality of sleep has an effect on the immune system. Good sleep is associated with a reduced risk of infection.

In addition to physical ailments, sleep also affects mental health. When someone has good quality sleep, the chance for depression, anxiety, and trouble concentrating is lower than when someone has poor quality sleep. Also, afternoon naps of less than thirty minutes ensure that people are more alert during the day. They also contribute to job performance.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep and good quality sleep are important for good health. For adults, a sleep duration of seven to nine hours is needed on a regular basis for optimal health. However, according to the RIVM, one in five Dutch people aged 12 and over has trouble sleeping. Women have more trouble sleeping than men. That is 26 percent versus 16 percent.

So it is very important to get good sleep to reduce the risk of weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and anxiety. Who sleeps well reduces the risk of serious diseases and disorders.
