“Poor Creatures” Outranks “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” in 2024 Oscar Nominations

Between the two litigants (Oppenheimer e Barbie), the third and the fourth (Poor creatures e Killers of flower moon) enjoy. The 2024 Oscar nominations are served. And they reserve many surprises. Meanwhile if the favorite Oppenheimer it stops at 10 (in any case with the heaviest categories: film, direction, leading and supporting actor, photography, editing, production design) even if there are 13 nominations in total, Barbie ends up even more at stake with 8 miserable nominations, of which two in the same category for the best song (a juke box film, in short, we understood it) and the empty boxes of Greta Gerwig as director and Margot Robbie as best actress that scream intellectual honesty even among the most fluorescent progressives of the Academy.

So if the two big titles of the season don’t exactly fill the bill, here comes the real outsider, at least in terms of numbers: Poor creatures. The film directed by the Greek Yorgos Lanthimosabout the Frankenstein damsel who learns sex and Marxism in a late nineteenth-century steampunk, Golden Lion at the last Venice Film Festivalputs the arrow and overtakes the universe world of scientists with crises of conscience and deflated dolls with crises of unconsciousness, marking in the table 12 nomination. Here too the heaviest ones include film, direction, non-original screenplay, leading actress, photography and editing. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the twist that’s more Apple (the producers) than authorial (the director, less the film) of the not-so-memorable latest effort by Martin Scorsese: Killers of flower moon. Ten nominations for the drama about natives rich in oil but in poor health who could turn into nothing. Sure, the numbers are there. And the battle in the rear could leave Oscars and wounded on the street to make neither history nor the en plein.

So much so that even a Napoleon Of Ridley Scott, ridiculed by most, has collected three precious minor nominations that certainly don’t sell out at the fish market. Also frightening in the table of totals are the five nominations for the latest Palme d’Or at Cannes (there are the winners of European festivals, think of what Holywood is today), Anatomy of a murder. Justine Triet he convinced several members of the Academy and marks five in the notebook that he will bring to Beverly Hills in March on the red carpet: film, screenplay and direction (his), best actress, editing. Moreover, in the top five directors where, we remember and underline, the Gerwig phenomenon is missing, Triet she is the only female candidate among fierce males like Nolan (favorite), Scorsese, Lanthimos e Glazer.

Another box that creaks a thread is that among the best actresses where the plastic phenomenon Robbie/Barbie has been definitively eliminated, Emma Stone he will have to play with one Carey Mulligan in great shape, wife cuckolded and dying in Maestro by Bradley Cooper. Among men also the monumental work of Cillian Murphy seems to be slightly undermined by some returning horses: Cooper himself and above all that Paul Giamattidull professor in The Holdovers which is enjoying great success among Academy members.

If among supporting actresses it’s a done deal for the African American Da’Vine Joy Randolph Of The Holdoversthe favorite among men Robert Downey Jr., traitor in Oppenheimer risks big (for the Academy, not for us) with a big come De Niro. Nothing to say about the nominations for best film: since there are ten, they do everything in order to keep twists for the ending, with or without the wrong envelope. A fleeting note on what could become a coup: The boy and the heron by Miyazaki is in the top five for best animated film with the giant Disney/Pixar and the last forgettable Spider Man. While the veteran John Williams appears in the nominations for the 53rd time (5 wins) for the soundtrack of the latest Indiana Jones. Matteo Garrone is in the top five foreign language films with I am Captain. The awards ceremony of the 96th Oscar Night will be held on March 10th.
