[파이낸셜뉴스] It has been claimed that feeding milk mixed with a small amount of the mother’s feces to babies born by caesarean section will help improve their immunity.

According to the medical journal Comedy.com on the 1st, research results on ‘stool milkshake’ mixed with the mother’s stool were presented at the annual meeting of the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) on the 18th of last month.

Infectious disease experts at Finland’s Health King University Hospital, who conducted the study, said they conducted research on ‘stool milkshake’ based on previous research showing that intestinal bacteria (microbiome) can affect our health.

The research team conducted an experiment on 90 women scheduled for cesarean section at Helsinki University Hospital. However, 54 of the 90 women were excluded at the beginning of the experiment because harmful pathogens were found in their stool or for other reasons.

The research team mixed 3.5 mg of stool from a woman who gave birth to milk and provided it to the baby. Fifteen babies were given a ‘poo milkshake’ and the other 16 were given a placebo.

The research team said, “After analyzing the babies’ stool samples, the microbial diversity of the two groups was similar when they were just born, but over time, a large difference was observed between the babies who ate small amounts of stool and those who did not.”

He continued, “This difference persisted until the babies were 6 months old when they started eating baby food.” The experiment is currently continuing, and the research team plans to monitor the babies’ health for a total of two years.

However, the research team emphasized that the stool of the mothers who participated in the experiment was thoroughly tested to see if it contained pathogens that could cause disease in newborns, and that this method should never be attempted at home.

Meanwhile, an imbalance in the microbiome (intestinal microorganisms) is known to be related to diseases such as depression, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), which treats diseases by injecting feces from a healthy person into the intestines of a sick person, is one of the fields of research currently attracting attention.

The research team said, “Babies born by cesarean section are known to have a higher risk of developing asthma, digestive system inflammation, and diseases related to the immune system compared to babies born through natural birth.” They added, “Babies born by cesarean section are known to have a higher risk of developing diseases related to the immune system and the vagina of the mother.” “We also paid attention to the fact that the distribution of intestinal bacteria is different compared to babies born through natural birth because they are not exposed to ,” he said.
