The long-time manager of the municipal baths, Ralf Nehring, is leaving the service of the city of Krefeld at the end of the year. During his time there were spectacular hot days and major events with more than 10,000 visitors in the silk city, but also low points in Krefeld’s spa history. These include the collapse of the ceiling in the Bockum bathing center in 2000 and the closure of the historic city bath on Neusser Strasse in 2003. In total, he was able to look after around 16 million bathers in the municipal baths in Krefeld during his service life.

“Swimming pools are not just about big events that are remembered,” says Ralf Nehring. Anyone who, like him, has managed baths for such a long period of time was able to experience “joys and sorrows” up close when visiting the swimming pool. Here thousands of happy children with their seahorse badges, there accidents, injuries, thefts and arguments.

One of his fondest memories is associated with the introduction of defibrillators in the pool area, the use of which was largely promoted by him. A few weeks after its introduction, a swimmer who was rescued from the pool floor of the bathing center with a cardiovascular arrest was able to be resuscitated by using the “Defis”. The person rescued in this way then campaigned, among other things, for the “Action Revival in Krefeld”.

The 64-year-old Ralf Nehring had completed his training as a specialist for pool operations and his qualification as a master for pool operations in Mönchengladbach. On April 1, 1987, he switched to the service of the city of Krefeld, where on April 28, 1994 he took over the management of the municipal baths. He handed this over to the tandem Gabor Bujka and Torsten Zachau in May 2016. Since then, he has dealt intensively with specific pool issues such as hazardous substances law, chlorine gas alarm planning, bio-chemicals law, industrial safety regulations, occupational safety and health protection for employees.

Ralf Nehring will be retired from January 2022. However, at least in the coming year it will still be available by the hour to the sports and sports promotion department for the upcoming planning in the swimming pool area of the city of Krefeld. He treated himself to a glimpse into his retirement last weekend during a six-hour balloon flight over the Alps. He and his wife now want to travel frequently.
