Indianna Maddison (4) from Bishop Auckland in the UK was on holiday with her family in the Egyptian city of Hurghada in 2017, when she unnoticed ended up in the hotel’s swimming pool.
A holiday guest jumped into the pool, pulled up the girl and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The Indiana was then transported to hospital by ambulance.
The four-year-old died on Christmas Day 2 the same year, five days after being pulled out of the water.

This week, a court hearing is taking place about the course of events, and the girl’s parents have stated their views, reports BBC.
In the hearing, it appears that the parents in the morning had left the four-year-old to the girl’s adult sister, before they even took a trip into the city center.
When they returned, Indianna was playing by a large pool outside the family room.
The mother kept an eye on the youngest children, while the father went shopping. On the way back he heard screaming and his wife shouting.
– It’s Indianna!

Five minutes under water
A report from the hospital in Newcastle states that no one knows how the four-year-old suddenly ended up in the pool.
– She was under water for about five minutes, which caused a hypoxic ischemic brain injury, which is a combination of reduced oxygen and limited blood supply to the brain, it says in forensic scientist Karen Dilks’ report.
The forensic pathologist wrote that the four-year-old’s chance of survival depended on thorough life-saving first aid while she waited for professional treatment.
According to Dilks, there was no medical equipment on site. There were also no necessary medical devices in the ambulance that transported the four-year-old to the hospital.
The forensic pathologist determined that Indianna died due to the five minutes under water, combined with several deficiencies during the acute situation after she was picked up from the water.
On Christmas Eve, Indianna was flown back to a hospital in Newcastle, UK.
The four-year-old was admitted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary. After a brain scan, the doctors concluded that there was no hope. She had suffered an “irreversible” brain injury and died on December 26.
