It was 11:48 hours this Monday when the Pontevedra municipal plenary meeting fulfilled the planned script and removed Juan Carlos I from the street map of the city. He did it with votes of the two groups that form the coalition government, BNG and PSOE. Both the PP and the non-attached councilor, Goyo Revenga (former Citizen) voted against.
The Councilor for Culture, Carme Fouces (BNG), stressed that the measure constitutes “an act of justice, decency, and democratic hygiene». «Today is a historic day, which will be engraved in the story of the city», he pointed out, while insisting that Juan Carlos I is not worthy “of the honor of having a street in Pontevedra»Because it is «a corrupt character who charged commissions of dubious origin and also hid them in Switzerland to evade the treasury».
To avoid limiting themselves to journalistic reports that point to the irregularities allegedly committed by Juan Carlos I, both Fouces and the spokesman for the municipal group of the PSOE, Tino Fernández, alluded to statement made public by the House of the King on March 15, 2020 in which the current monarch, Felipe VI, renounced the inheritance that could correspond to his father, “As well as any asset, investment or financial structure whose origin, characteristics or purpose may not be in line with the legality and the criteria of rectitude and integrity that govern its institutional and private activity.” A statement that, in the opinion of the BNG and the PSOE of Pontevedra, clearly questions the activities of the emeritus.
He does not see it that way municipal spokesman for the PP, Rafa Domínguez, what regretted that Pontevedra is better known “for insulting and disrespecting” to people such as the former president of the Government Mariano Rajoy, declared persona non grata by the plenary session, or now the king emeritus. In addition, the popular spokesperson wondered if in the middle of the pandemic “this is the most important issue for the government of Pontevedra.”
Disregarding the allusions to the statement from the Casa del Rey, Domínguez questioned that the local government of Pontevedra relies exclusively on journalistic information to decide to withdraw the honors from Juan Carlos I, and mentioned information from several years ago that implicated the mayor of Pontevedra. Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores (BNG), in the Pokemon operation, something that finally came to nothing.
As for the avenue that until today bears the name of Juan Carlos I, will now be called “Virginia Pereira Renda”, who was Castelao’s companion and guarantor that his legacy returned to Galicia. «Historical memory and feminism are going to occupy that space in the city by right and by justice. From now on, this street will talk about dignity, dedication, public service, decency and the legacy of Virginia Pereira Renda », said Carme Fouces.
From the PP it was pointed out that in other circumstances they would have supported dedicating a Pontevedra street to which he was Castelao’s companion, but Rafa Domínguez criticized that with this decision the municipal government «it is tarnishing the name of Virginia Pereira by associating it with the insult to Juan Carlos I. In addition, he questioned that the change of name of the street will take place without the usual consensus among the political groups that have presided over this type of issue in the Pontevedra corporation so far.
