Jakarta Election: Independent Candidate Claims Victory Despite Early Polls
Jakarta, Indonesia – The Jakarta gubernatorial election took place on November 27th, with three candidate pairings vying for the city’s top leadership. The incumbent Anies Baswedan partnered with candidate for deputy governor Ahmad Riza Patria. They face challengers from two coalitions: Heru Budi Hartono and Ariza Putra, backed by a different political alliance, and educator and politician Joko "Jokowi" Widodo alongside progressive activist Sandiaga Uno.
Adding an element of intrigue to the race was the entry of Dharma Pongrekun and Kun Wardana, who ran as independent candidates. To appear on the ballot, they bravely gathered over 677,000 signatures, surpassing the minimum requirement of 618,968 needed for independent candidacy in Jakarta.
Despite facing initial hurdles over voter registration validity, Dharma and Kun persevered and secured a place on the ballot.
Early quick count polls conducted by various organizations have placed Dharma and Kun’s support at around 10%. Lembaga Survei Indonesia (LSI) estimated 10.61% support with a projected 57.69% voter turnout, while Indikator Politik reported a similar 10.61% share with a projected 67.76% voter turnout.
While these polls suggest weak initial support, Dharma confidently claims victory, asserting that the results don’t accurately reflect the reality on the ground.
"Listen carefully," he told his supporters at a gathering. "These are the actual figures of our victory. It should be at least 52 percent, 52.5 percent."
Dharma breaks down his claimed victory by attributing two factors to the discrepancy with quick count results. He reasons that the polls miss out on:
-
Supporters who were unable to make it to the polling booths due to various reasons, and
- A segment of the electorate he labels as "victimized", experiencing economic hardships and forced into making choices that don’t reflect their true loyalty.
He poignantly emphasizes empathy for these voters, stating, "We must love them because they don’t know what they have done, which harms the family of Jakarta and the nation of Indonesia."
Dharma begs the critical question: does he genuinely represent a sleeping giant amongst the electorate, a groundswell of support yet to be reflected in official polls? Only time will tell as the Jakarta Election Commission (KPU) meticulously analyzes the final vote count, with a target deadline of December 16th.
The fate of Jakarta hangs in the balance, with each candidate vying for the opportunity to lead Indonesia’s bustling capital.

The official announcement from the Jakarta Election Commission is eagerly awaited by the public. In the meantime, all candidates are encouraged to uphold the spirit of fair play and respect the democratic process.
