Ponferrada City Council takes the first step towards energy communities | Radio Bierzo

Ponferrada City Council takes the first step towards its own energy community. It is about producing renewable energy and in turn being able to consume that energy without depending on other operators. The idea is to work in collaboration with the City to place solar panels in municipal facilities or schools. From there the necessary energy would be generated to feed these buildings and, in addition, to supply the homes of vulnerable families in the environment. Pedro Fernández is the Ponferrada Councilor for Sustainability.

At the moment measurements are being made at the Navaliegos College, although it is still too early to know if one of those communities will be established there. The City Council also intends to facilitate the constitution of these energy communities in any other private area of the city. Precisely, the UNED today celebrates a conference on this type of facilities. Although European legislation has not finished adapting in Spain, they will soon be a reality that will attract many small communities, for example, the villages. As understood by the professor of Economics and speaker at the conference, José Luis Calvo, El Bierzo would be an ideal territory.

In his opinion, the large electricity companies will have to adapt to the new system and become collaborators.

The day is scheduled at a quarter to eleven in the UNED assembly hall, with restricted capacity, although it can be followed online through the website of the Ponferrada headquarters.
