In the last two weeks of US President Trump’s term, Secretary of State Pompeo stated that the removal of all “self-imposed restrictions” on US-Taiwan relations is intended to further stimulate Beijing and create obstacles to the improvement of Sino-US relations. However, the US President-elect Biden’s team stated that after taking office, Biden’s compliance with the “One China” policy and the “Taiwan Relations Act” means that the Biden administration will stick to the United States’ past stance on cross-strait relations.
Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on January 20. In response to Pompeo’s remarks, officials of the Biden transition team issued a statement to the media, stating that Biden is still committed to the implementation of the one-China policy and the Taiwan Relations Act and will continue after taking office. Support both sides of the strait to peacefully resolve problems in a way that conforms to the wishes and interests of the Taiwan people. The official stated that Biden believes that the US should provide Taiwan with strong and cross-party support.
Pompeo suddenly announced over the weekend that the United States had “imposed” all restrictions on official exchanges between administrative agencies and Taiwan, claiming that the United States had unilaterally imposed restrictions in the past to please the Chinese Communist Party.
Evan S. Medeiros, a former member of the National Security Council of the White House and a professor at Georgetown University in Washington, described Pompeo’s move as a propaganda stunt, with little actual effect. He pointed out that the Trump administration will step down within two weeks. Although Beijing will certainly respond to Pompeo angrily, he believes that it will not take any action to affect relations with the new US government before Biden takes office.

Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the U.S. clearly promised in the Sino-U.S. “Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations” that there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China; Paeo’s statement seriously violated the basic norms of international relations, seriously interfered in China’s internal affairs and judicial sovereignty, and seriously violated the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués. China firmly opposes this and strongly condemns it.
The US State Department also announced earlier that Kelly Craft, the US representative to the United Nations, will visit Taiwan from January 13 to 15. The Chinese criticizes that Pompeo and his like are constantly performing “final madness”, unscrupulously using the remaining term to deliberately sabotage Sino-US relations and serve their personal political interests. This kind of trick goes against the trend of history and goes against the friendly public opinion of the two peoples, and will surely be punished by history.
