Pompeo said the US must maintain a campaign of maximum pressure and sanctions against the Iranian regime. He went on to say that getting out of the nuclear deal was part of the pressure on Iran to help create a new Middle East.
“Reducing that pressure is a dangerous option, it will definitely weaken the new partnership for peace in the region and only strengthen Iran,” Pompeo said, as reported by Al Arabiya on Thursday (19/11/2020).
Pompeo also said he hopes to see the spread of disinformation, reports and arguments that say sanctions have failed. “We must not be fooled,” he said, during a visit to Israel. (Also read: Iran claims that it is ready to accept the US again in a nuclear deal)
“The regime’s proxies and terrorist partners demand cash, and have been forced to take austerity measures, even deter some terrorist fighters,” he said in an indirect reference to Hezbollah and other Iranian militias in Iraq, Yemen and Syria.
Previously, the US imposed new sanctions against Iran for alleged human rights violations. The new sanctions target Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi and Bonyad Mostazafan, the organization headed by Iran’s spiritual Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Alavi is accused of using his ministry’s portfolio to crack down on protesters during the bloody protests in November 2019. Meanwhile, Bonyad Mostazafan was used as a cover by Khamenei to give “awards” to his allies.
