“The Iranian regime’s execution of Navid Afkari is a heinous and cruel act. We condemn him very strongly. It was an outrageous attack on human dignity, even by the regime’s despicable standards. The voices of the Iranian people will not be silenced, “said Pompeo, as reported by Al Arabiya on Sunday (9/13/2020).
It was previously reported that Afkari was arrested in anti-government protests in 2018. He was sentenced to two death sentences, six and a half years in prison and 74 lashes on charges of murdering a water company security guard.
His brothers, Vahid and Habib, were sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison respectively. (Read also: China Asks US To Stop Participating In Its Country Affairs)
Last week, Iranian state television aired a video in which Afkari appeared to confess to killing security guards, but the wrestler and his two brothers have released several audio recordings saying they were tortured into making false confessions.
Their mother also said in the videotape that her sons had been tortured to testify against each other, and that one of them had attempted suicide due to the physical and psychological stress in prison.
