Pollution – Dijon creates a low emission zone from January 2025: what does that mean?

From 1 January 2025, Dijon Métropole will have the Low Emissions Zone (ZFE) to limit the presence of the most polluting vehicles. However, a twelve month exemption was voted for.

Dijon and nine municipalities in its city will become a Low Emission Zone (ZFE), as required by law. The system will be implemented from January 1, 2025 and the text was presented to the council of Dijon Métropole on Thursday September 26, showing The Good of the People.

Who is affected?

According to the text that provides this measure, “all the traffic routes in the city of Dijon that are inside the ring road will be in the area of low mobility emissions”. The cities of Ahuy, Daix, Dijon, Chenôve, Fontaine-lès-Dijon, Longvic, Marsannay-la-Côte, Plombières-lès-Dijon, Saint-Apollinaire and Talant are concerned, list Actu Côte-d’Or.

How does it work?

The aim of Low Emission Zones is to improve air quality by limiting the circulation of the most polluting vehicles. So drivers need to buy a Crit’Air sticker to add to their windshield. The more polluting the car, the higher the figure.

Twelve months’ exemption

In the city of Dijon, air quality would not be a real concern. The level of nitrogen dioxide is lower than European standards. 70% of the vehicles circulating in the area in 2022 were electric or in categories Crit’Air 1 or 2. And this percentage will increase in the coming decades. Therefore, Dijon Métropole has voted for a general exemption for twelve months from January 1, 2025. It can be renewed. Conclusion, all vehicles will be able to continue circulating now. A communication campaign should be launched at the end of the year.
